Quinceanera Celebration Essentials

When a girl of Hispanic heritage turns 15, there is no greater honor than a quinceanera in her honor. The special day is her time to be the center of attention as she is surrounded by friends and family in a festive atmosphere. While these events can range from small gatherings to large, ornate affairs that rival a wedding ceremony and reception, there are some common factors that are included in every celebration. These items, including a quinceanera tiara, gown, a Bible, shoes and a special mass, are the essential ingredients to throwing a successful and fun event.

Quinceanera gowns are the central focus for many girls. Most wear white dresses to show purity, but a number of girls are now choosing pale pink gowns as well. Traditionally, quinceanera gowns are made of satin and lace and are very similar to wedding gowns in appearance and sense of grandeur.

Along with the dress goes a special quinceanera tiara, which the honored girl is given by her parents in exchange for a headpiece that it worn at the start of the ceremony. The exchange symbolizes the girl's status as a princess before God. At the same time the headpiece is exchanged for the tiara, the girl is handed a scepter to signify the passing on of adult responsibilities and authority. A Bible is also given to the girl as a symbol of her faith in God and herself.

The highlight of the event for many guests and young girls alike is the reception following the mass. The event includes the introduction of the court and the honored girl, followed by the girl dancing with her father and then her escort. This is where the shoes come in. The girl enters the reception wearing flat shoes, and during the party her father exchanges those slippers for high-heeled shoes to symbolize her change to a woman.

A successful quinceanera can be planned with a few basic essentials, including a quinceanera tiara, gown, shoes and traditional ceremonies. Planning can take years, but the memories can last a lifetime.
